Casal dei Fichi Progress - August 2008
It’s been a while since our last update, nearly 2 years, so we’ll give you the condensed version. |

September saw another party as Bruce and Elaine, who had married in the spring, came to Casal dei Fichi to celebrate with their friends and family. A delicious sea-food lunch was followed back at Casal dei Fichi by pizza and dancing to a live accordionist. The following day Elaine, beautiful in her bridal dress, and Bruce were driven by Rosario, who had scrubbed himself up almost as much as his sparkling black truck, to the magnificent church of Santa Croce where an informal ceremony was held under the ancient brick arches. |
Following champagne and photographs we moved on to the elaborate San Rocco church in Francavilla where the priest performed a blessing and un-prompted locals were waiting outside with rice. A sumptuous meal at Madre Tierra was followed by more partying at Casal dei Fichi and again fireworks, this time not so close to the pool.
Like the summer weather our bookings continued well into October. We travelled to Sicily for 2 weeks, although the 8-30 starts on the language school left little time for sightseeing. We concluded that although Taormina is a beautiful and historic city with a very impressive volcano nearby, it is over-run by tourists and does not begin to compare with Marche. Maybe we’re biased? We slowed down a bit over the winter although most of the apartments needed redecorating which takes time. We also had a few visitors who discovered that Marche is a fascinating place to visit at any time of year. In November we harvested our olives in brilliant sunshine wearing just shorts. Also in November our friends from Madre Tierra organised an evening of Marche food and wines in London’s Groucho Club. Various people helped them and we took a small part, it was a great success for Madre Tierra and thanks to anyone who came along. |

Roger (oh yes, still here) tiled our bathrooms, ah – the bliss of having a bath after 2 years! – the kitchen was fitted and in January we finally moved into our apartment occupying the whole of the top floor. Moving in was a matter of urgency since the rest of the house was occupied by our friends who came out on 2nd Feb for our Civil Partnership party. If we say so ourselves, Casal dei Fichi is a damn good place for a party. We had a marquee on the front of the house and opened up 2 of the living rooms. MT’s catered a delicious meal for 50 people, mainly our friends from the UK. In the evening we were joined by 70 local friends, Mauro from the Dorchester and Harrods entertained us with his fantastic piano playing and singing, Lorraine Bowen performed her unique and wonderful show and we danced till the small hours. Francavilla has never seen the likes, but all the people of all ages were so supportive that we really felt that we have been totally accepted into the community. |
Now, in August, we are fully booked and in the midst of summer. We have been delighted that so many of our visitors have chosen to come back (impressively over 50%) and we’re looking forward to seeing some familiar faces again this summer.
We still find time to discover beautiful beaches and last Sunday we went to the fantastic Palio in Ascoli Piceno.
A brief update on the other mammals at Casal dei Fichi. Esther, the beautiful little white cat disappeared last August, we hope she found somewhere with a better meal plan. Pero and Mono are doing well, about a month ago 3 more kittens; Nero, Claudius and Caligula joined the household. Balzo has been diagnosed with Panus, a chronic eye condition which could eventually leave him blind, in the mean time he has to have cream in his eyes every day though the “doggles” were not a great success, he is as popular and flirtatious as always. Hattie is as mad, lively, affectionate, loveable and infuriating as ever. We acquired the rabbit that Roger couldn’t bear to slaughter. Roger did buy that house in Francavilla, he’s cleared it out and hopes to start work on it soon, in the mean time he has registered as an Italian builder and has plenty of work a very active social life and maintains high hopes for a love life. |

So to close, thanks again to those of you who have helped make our new business a success and we look forward to seeing as many as possible of you here again at Casal dei Fichi.
